Closed by... vacations? Not true!

Well, the current state of our affairs and the new events make an necessary explanation in my own words, as " the brains " of Flowersongs Time Filters.

Possibly the first thing that you think is something like "what happened with the recording sessions?". Simple: we don't remain satisfied with the result and we decide not lose energy after a first mixing, leaving that tracks in a booth of "never listened, out of FSTF". Often it's very good do these things, focusing in the following step. It's not necessary that everything what you record see the light, after.

Our particular mark III has not given the results for that we were waiting. Sometimes I see that it finds it hard to many people understand that this they are rock songs, but that we do jazz. Oh, yes! Slightly wild jazz, but ultimately it's jazz. This erroneous concept can turn out inside the band, and this is a real problem. This doesn't have to sound as the Miles Davis experiments in the 70, is not my joke.

We are living a intense casting of drummers for our mark IV. A casting opened for possible last-minute incorporations, if you're interested. We have clearly for what battery we bet and the people in our list have a suitable profile, but I would love to meet somebody unknown. Always is good, knowing new talents.

If you are interested, please contact with contact.fstf@gmail.com

But there is something more.

These arrangements were born to have an important harmonic support. When we incorporate a pianist in the band we were looking for a different sound, always an acoustic piano, never something electric in the keys. Ok, that did not work and we will not go back, but we need this harmony again, this serenity.

We have a new musician in Flowersongs. Oriol Miró Caparrós has entered in the band like guitarist, pianist, tres cubano, samplers and programing... and all these little things that we think.

It's a hard work, but Mr. Miró is a very qualified person. Guitarist of rock and jazz, composer of original soundtracks and a very good arrenger. This sounds fine!

Though we "close for vacations" we have a very hard work and we will not stop. This is only a little rest for you and very hard job for us.

We will down to the crossroads

Sometimes life takes us for different ways... in this case is turn for our co-worker and drummer, Toni lledó.

New projects appear in the horizon and they do that we separate our own destinies, closing a cycle in our mad and enterteining gait jointly. A trip full of effort, work and dedication but especially music, where we all have learned and shared something.

Because of it, the FSTF's staff we wish him sincerely a future full of successes and we hope that his talent shines  there, where his steps goes.

Springs Lullaby

We want to share with all of you one of the greatest presents that spring has brough to us: Mr Córdoba, our double-bass player is now rehearsing with a new instrument: a baby´s rattle!

Yes, he´s feelling the joy of fatherhood, and knowing what is happening right now in Spain, particularly in Barcelona, we can assume that his son will be another one of the "children of the revolution".

We want to send our congratulations to Toni Córdoba and Marival and we invite you to shout with us: welcome to the world, little Bruno!

Remembering Koji Dagushi

Remembering, at the way's end seems that only we still have a lot of remembers and feelings.

Last Friday Mr. Koji Dagushi died for sudden cardiac death, an unexpected news of someone young and full of energy and ideas.  A real Jazzman, best pianist, great friend and a whole gentleman.  An honourable and genuine life, an example of fight for a dream, for the music that was sounding in your mind.

Like I said in the last entry in this blog "all or nothing at all". A real reflexion of our lifes.

Concerts, recording sessions, road trips, confidences... nothing gets lost, mon patron. And it's very sad for my to know that we will not have new common moments, but nothing of what we have lived is lost.

I remember you specially, my friend. But also the people in Flowersongs, your band 4in1, la Compagnie des Gitans Creatives, our families... We are many people that we love you. I doubt that nobody who knew you or who has listened your music could forget this devilish and punky japanese of rapid fingers and sharp mind ever.

And, at the end, we don't play with Sakura.

A new sailor in our ship

We can confirm it: from next week R. Mihura will take charge of the new entries in our blog. She has taken part in many decisions in FSTF from the beginning of this trip, contributing with her professional experience and all these funny and creative ideas on presence in Internet, so her inspiration in the texts of our news will be great, sure.

R, welcome to the club. This night plays a very good quintet of elegant cats and this round table in the end always is reserved for our motley crew. You must feel comfy and always free, here we all play the same song.

Like Hannibal was saying "I love it when a plan comes together"

Next week they turn our news. We are making improvements. Thank you for your understanding.

All or Nothing at All

Well, here I go again. With this words into my head and the Coltrane's version in my ears.

I will begin this new entry with a big hug for Delphine Merciel for every hour that she has dedicated to the project FSTF. Delphine has been the person in the haze that has written many of the things that you could have read in this blog, among other things. For work and personal reasons from this last Monday she isn't in the Flowersongs Time Filters Staff.

She's an authentic walking jazz encyclopedia and a person with a lot of talent as well as a great help and friend. Her personal support has been vital in many moments. We will miss her important colaboration.

Thanks a lot, Cerises. Je te dois un dîner au Drouant et je n'oublierai pas ça.

Last week the staff announcing important news in Flowersongs's bosom, ok? Well, now we can say that this studio work is a joint production between Eddie Roca and myself, and Jordi Roca is the sound engineer for it. I'm specially grateful by your support, guys. From now we are going enter to a new stage and a new really enterteining trip and you come in the best moment.

You know that providing that I have written in the blog I done some musical recommendation. I want to speak about Irene Aranda, an Andalusian pianist with authentic talent that for a time is rolling with her own project and that I can affirm it's sure she will provide to all us many moments of intense and really creative music. This girl is in the good's side, really!

Next March 31 and April 1 she will be in a improvisation workshop in the Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Motril, in Granada.

Irene Aranda's personal web page: http://www.irenearanda.com/

We come at the end of a stage and we begin other, at many levels. Since always it happens the big changes are waved, but something necessary and good for our personal way.

Possibly the next week let's not have our weekly entry in the blog. Don't worry: it's only something temporal. Very soon you will have our new news... and many other things.

  We're going, we're going, we're going up!

A new video, Flowersongs in Facebook and something else about the band.

After a few unexpected vacations the Flowersongs's staff charge again! Today we speak with Ernest Margi and he was commenting important news in the production of the new studio work of the band. At present only we can say that already we have dates for the recording and that we will have important news about the technical staff roll.

Margí he was speaking that Toni Lledó is playing in Morocco these days and he has said to us that from this next Monday Antonio Córdoba and Joan Vilalta returns at the Bar Horus Efrén in Granollers with the open latin-jazz sessions. About this, Margi has said that possibly he will take part in this new jam.

Bar Horus Efrén is in Fontanella Street, in Granollers.

Flowersongs has a new profil in Facebook. We have had many problems these first days with it, since Facebook's safety measures have doubted about our genuineness. Thankfully the direct collaboration Barcelona - Ottawa has allowed to solve this in a few time.

  Our Facebook adress http://on.fb.me/Flowersongs

There is Flowersongs's new video in Youtube, also a bulk pictures from the documentary about how make an arrangement of FSTF. This time we have Antonio Córdoba playing solo the Purple Haze on double bass. We want to copy the comment that Ernest Margi has dedicated to the video in his own Facebook today (sorry, boss... I warned you).

"Córdoba... And what the hell can I say of him? I love this guy. There are two ways for playing double-bass: effective or romantic. Oh, lucky! He's in the second group! I love the people who plays this way. But Antonio has another thing that is even better: he's one of the best persons that I have know in years" (Ernest Margi Facebook's words)

Next week more and better. Come on!

2/25/11

Again in the second floor with the disheveled madman.

In this occasion I want to write these lines to give personally a welcome to our new signings, and I will take advantage to do a declaration of principles  about some current affairs.

Jordi Roca and Eddie Roca (without familial relation between them, no confusions) train already part of our technical staff, in studio and live. Both are recognized professionals with wide experience and they believe and bet for Flowersongs's concept. His incorporation like habitual members in the staff will allow to offer you some extras that you will surprise pleasingly.

Welcome to the FSTF world, guys! Become you comfortable, we have a lot of work ahead.

Well, I have doubted very much if to write this here or not, but I believe that it's very important that all we, the artists, let's do our own declaration  about the current situation. Also it's very important that I clarify that this is Flowersongs's personal reflection and own mine, an opinion that never wants to be a dogma and that respects any other visions. This is the magic of the real freedom spirit.

Nowadays in our country we have a authentic commotion about the Sinde law. A law that allows the government could suspend your connection to Internet and undertake the legal actions that it sees suitable to sanction the person who has unloaded or shared contents with copyright without authorization in the net.

This is not new. All the countries have taken his measurements around this matter for time. Personally I think that the one who always seems to remain free in this "witchhunt" are the authentic problem in charge of the "problem", the communication companies. They are those who have offered us these tools and those who have not wanted to do of it one authentic way of cultural experience, only another tool for the resistance to change and accomodation in the leisure... but I don't want to lose a lot of time with my own ideas in this space in which I speak in representation.

Whole people in Flowersongs have a very clear and transparent attitude on our own rights in our work. Our studio productions are destined for the free unload and the free utilization. We are jazz musicians and the jazz is something alive and organic that really is to be lived in live. The "tinned" products are only a tool of knowledge and a way for sharing ideas. The studio work must not be the aim, it must be only a tool to the service of the authentic aim: the concerts, the common experience between the artist and his public.

We have grown up in a culture that rewards the egoism, the sense of the possession, the lack of respect. Possibly this it's not the way, at least it's not my way. We believe that this is of our property, our house, our car... and really the authentic possession of all these material things are in the hands of our bank, or our financier. Let's change the concept, ok? We are going to give, instead of asking. The real way for the change and for shake it is the real colaboration. We all, you and we, have the tools and the talent. We can do it! The governments and the corporations always has a terrible lack: they don't have authentic imagination, they cannot "create". The war is not out, the real war is inside ours. Be careful with your own ego and your property sence!

I insist: this is our opinion in this, our project. We respect other musicians' ideas with that we play and when we do it with them we play in his own rules. But here, in Flowersongs, we have a firm attitude towards our own contribution in the world as artists and like band.

For technical adjustments and booked dates our recording has been postponed for a few weeks. Don't worry, there's will be only a few weeks and in this time you will have news of the band in videos, some concerts and other surprises. It's possible that I turn to write again here, but speaking what really we are interested all: speaking about music. Our staff will take charge the latest information about ours new news.

I want to be grateful also with the Fanatic Guitars People, and specially at Juanjo Verdú for his collaboration in our documentary, giving his facilities, equipment and services. Thanks, guys. We stay in contact.

  Live the life.

The first video in Youtube

While the production of Flowersongs's new video continues you can find an advance in Youtube. This unripe captures in bulk were recorded it does less than two weeks  in Huerfanitos Hidden Place, a hard freezing winter day. In spite of this cold day the band did not have problems to interpret two times Purple Haze.

We want to congratulate Austin Peralta on his new disc Endless Planets, a nice surprise at the height of his youth. Till now we took only references as some videos in Youtube with his band and like guest artist with Hiromi or Corea but now we have her latest record in the habitual internet ways. We all should hear Austin's music.

Also we want to give the welcome to Marival in her arrival to Barcelona. The Córdoba's family continues in the way! You're welcome here, Marival.

A nice surprise for all us

We have just received important and unexpected news. Ernest Margi is one of fifteen semifinalists for the Yamaha Guitar Hero Championship in 2011.

We have spoken with him a few minutes ago and he says that it's really satisfied with this news. The history of the track chosen by the yamaha's team is really funny.

We add a link to the official web of the Yamaha Guitar Hero and the review in Yamaha's web.

Congratulations, Mr. Margi. Keep on!

In deep with the guy of the messy hair... well: in the second floor.

I'm going to take advantage of this sunday with the sunny morning while I listen Resistance is Futile* and expire with my commitment, explaining the reasons of the new evolutions of the melodies and guitar parts.

The musicians in Flowersongs has changed several times from his birth up to our current formation, and every change has needed a adaptation the songs to the new format. Curiously we have never tried to repeat an instrument.

When everything began I had an important harmonic labor while the sax was playing the melodies. We were playing with a lot of voicing and harmony parts in guitar and sax, but my work out of my solos was principally harmonic. When we decide the incorporation of a pianist in the band I was looking for a very full sound harmonically while I was playing the melodies. I didn't resigned to my work of accompanist, since the pianist was interpreting many melodies in the set.

In our third evolution, just like trio, everything changed: My sound was basically a soloist, but I knew that Córdoba could give very much supporting the armonies and the force that we needed, and really it has worked good. But I believe that the music has to be in constant evolution. I need always a new change, a new step, a new road for the growth.

If you listen the Wayne Shorter's Footprints Live you are listening his most famous tunes, but they sound totally new. That's evolucion, man! The real life! I needed something new in the interpretation of our melodies and tunes, this new step that I have mentioned already. I have wanted to add something of Ahmal Hamal's style in the melodies, in and out, with all these harmonic tension and something much "ordered", but without losing the free-jazz concept.

In the next days you will have good and new news of the project Flowersongs. All the pieces of this complicated puzzle seem to be fitting. We are now in Barcelona again, working to enter in studio these next weeks. We will keep you informed. Hugs, my little avant-garde friends!

                Ernest Margi.

*Steve Coleman and Five Elements. A album highly recommend.

After Holidays

Which are the last news of the Flowersongs guys?
What did the Christmas Days bring us?

To the band seems that it has brought new guitar concepts, with more accuracy in the interpretations of the presentations and bringing the sonority of the melodies over like interpreting in the piano. Also there are new elements in percussion as the triangle, bongos or tubular bells.

Last weeks Ernest Margi is playing in the scenes of the Barcelona city jam-session and its surroundings. Also he's working in a new project with the frenchmen Julien Pouquet and Thierry Millet, the official drummer of Dagushi's 4 in 1, the band of the Japanese virtuous pianist koji Dagushi where Margi also is a habitual member. In spite of his tight schedule he had a moment to explain that all these new concepts in Flowersongs are happened after deep reflections about the former formations of the band, their actual sound today and a new evolution point. Also he has compromised for write an article about all this here in the blog in these days.

Toni Lledó is at present in Margi's house in Flix working in this new musical concepts and the new percussion elements, and you can listen Antonio Córdoba playing in duo with Joan Vilalta at the marimba every Monday in the latin jazz open-sessions in Bar Horus in Granollers, sessions where also you can see play Margi occasionally.

In the next weeks the band will at the studio for a new recording work, the first of this new formation in trio. Also bring out the video "how to make a Flowersongs theme" that you will find in several web channels. This new year came with full hard work so we will continue informing from this blog of all the news of the flowers free-jazz boys.

  Keep on Rockin!

Who? Why? How?

Flowersongs Time Filters is a powered free-jazz and avant-garde trio, where that three seasoned gypsy souls join with his creative weapons with one aim: take a step beyond the music of the Flower Power moviment and its soundtrack. Ernest Margi on electric, acoustic and double neck guitars, Antonio Córdoba on double-bass and Toni Lledò on drums, udu, musical saw and percussion. They do of every concert a trip risked in this time of present jazz.

Children of his time, a time convulsed with movement constant and faster that all times before lived. They are part the community of the "I don't play jazz for my grandpas". Without concessions, without any type of shame or taboo. Pure unexpected, raw and progressive jazz music.

Possibly the best way of understanding the birth of this band it's reading the own words of his musical director and guitarist Ernest Margi. So... here we go!

"Flowersongs Time Filters was a product of a chance, in origin. Well, probably not so chance.

Though I have never renounced the standard music, full of great songs and the whole school of what and how in jazz, always but I have this in my mind: these aren't my standards, it's not the music that I heard when I was a child or a teenager, my own standards was different.

I believe firmly that the jazz in a language (not a simple style of music) that talk about current affairs and modern times. This is very important for a jazz healthy and alive, is necessary that we update our musical speech to the feeling and thought of today people. We are necessary for create new ideas, not for only nostalgic times.

For years I have experimented on my bands with songs of Metallica, Nirvana, Living Colour, Steve Ray Vaugham... and so forth, together with all the sensational tunes of Coltrane, Miles, Ahmal, Parker, Shorter, Mingus, Monk and all the greats. Arrange again all these pop and rock songs is very funny if you think in jazz.

Almost two years ago Jordi Pallarols wanted a new jazz quartet. For it he recruited in a beginning Antonio Córdoba to the double-bass and Pep Cebrián at the drums. Pep was the one that called me to join in the new band because we had coincided in several bands and he knew well my work.

At the beginning the band was going to be work with standards of the forties and the fifties, but immediately we met put into the world of Shorter, Hancock, Harrell and all these sensational histories of the seventies, tremendously hippies and open-minded.

Pallarols said to me that I should do some arrangement of some Hendrix's song. Oh, God! I warned him of the danger that his words were carrying because I was not thinking went a arrangement already written by Jimi or some other guy, I was not going to play with a wrong covers band with ride in swing and double-bass in crotchet. New chords, new concept, new feel. If I was bringing new arrangements that one would be something new, sounding like modern jazz and avant-garde.

He accepted my conditions and this day began this intense trip.

In two weeks I had the scores of every member of the band of five tunes, and a concept: that one was our honoring to the music of the flower power movement. I was totally involved and motivated in the project. We were considering the possibility of incorporating a pianist in the band, Though Jordi and I had very different ideas about how this pianist should play this music.

For time problems (and because the band was moving away much from his original idea) Jordi Pallarols drop out the group a little time after. After his departure I was a time out of the band for personal matters and for other professional offers, but in this days I spoke with Oscar Machancoses about his incorporation in the band. I was looking for this opened and light sound, like Bill Evans, full of shades. Oscar joined in the band and during my absence Antonio Córdoba directed the rehearsals with a very good outcomes.

After some gigs Córdoba and I saw clear that that formation was not for what we were searching. The incorporation of the pianist had not just worked and Cebrián was a drummer with swing, but his attack in moments of intensity was not the wished one for us. We decide close that phase and begin again like a trio and playing more in free-form.

We shuffle several drummers to substitute Pep, but I will never forget the surprise and illusion in the face of Antonio the day when I notified my decision: our new drummer would be Toni Lledò. They already had played together in different formations like Huerfanitos, els Complets or Metamòrfos. Toni is a drummer of very opened concepts, with the sound and attack of a rock drummer, but with a cracked constant of ideas... very improviser, very free. He was the most suitable musician.

Today continues being the best formula for Flowersongs. Antonio Córdoba with his big and round sound, vibrating with every note that he plays and doing that everything takes a step beyong. Toni Lledò with this drums full of new ideas and so of the seventies, besides his contributions with udu, musical saw and percussions... and I: moving free over all this musical wall and risk it all. Playing with acoustical guitars, strats and old fuzzes, sounding like a minimoog, playing double necks and twelve strings... like a dream for a guitarist improviser.

Life forges curious alliances and this alliance was good. We have finished forming part of a small great family that plays like funny and fighting cats."

Ernest Margi's words, introduction by the FSTF staff.
